DOE TRANSFORMER EFFICIENCY FINAL RULES

The Department of Energy has published their final rule on distribution transformer efficiency ratings. The new efficiency ratings effective for transformers manufactured after January 1, 2016 are only slightly higher than the current standards.

Ermco is fully prepared to implement the new standards in 2016. Western United will begin to purchase stock units that meet the new requirements beginning in late 2015 and will communicate possible price increases (very limited) at that time.

The Department of Energy has committed to again reviewing these standards before 2016 if the supply chain for amorphous core steel changes.

WUE UPDATE

WUE’s Open House and vendor display at the Brighton warehouse is scheduled for Thursday September 12, 2013. Over 35 vendors are expected to participate. Mark you calendars!

Navapache Electric Cooperative from Lakeside, Arizona has joined WUE as WUE’s 57th member. All members enjoy the benefits of competitive pricing, having required construction material stocked in WUE warehouses, fast delivery, superior service and annual capital credits.

Northern Rio Arriba Electric Cooperative is now a participant in WUE’s inventory management program. They are the first cooperative from New Mexico to participate in the program.

WUE has been approved as a distributor in New Mexico for Hubbell’s line of reclosers, sectionalizers and capacitors.

Greg Mumm is now WUE’s outside account manager providing service to customers in WY, NE and northeastern CO.

Brenda Freeman has joined WUE as an inside sales specialist. Brenda brings over 10 years of industry experience, having worked at a manufacturer’s rep firm prior to joining WUE.

WUE is now stocking CC Custom LED lights.

WUE is listed as the 99th largest electrical distributor in the US by the Electrical Wholesaling June 2013 magazine edition and the 3rd largest as measured by sales per employee.

Duraline, a manufacturer of poly-duct, now offers a 20 year warranty on all product due to a new blend of resins being used in producing their product.

LED LIGHT UPDATE

According to Pike Research, LED lamps by 2015 will become the second-leading type of street light in sales, behind high pressure sodium lamps. The lamps are gaining traction due to efficiency improvements and improved affordability, with costs falling approximately 50% over the past two years.

A recent comparison of the coverage area of a 43W LED fixture (manufactured by CC Custom / Sylvania and three other different manufacturers) versus a 175W mercury vapor security light fixture with different heights indicates the following:

The Sylvania / CC Custom LED light also boasts a designed 100,000 hours (20—25 yrs.) life because of the quality of their LED bulbs, driver, 36kv arrester and long life photo control (TE).

PUPI—TANGENT CROSSARM ASSEMBLY COST COMPARISON

More and more electric utilities are adopting PUPI standard-duty tangent crossarms—in addition to their PUPI deadend assemblies. They have found that when total costs are considered, the lifetime benefits of PUPI braceless tangent crossarms easily offset the relative small difference in installed cost!

The PUPI installed cost is only $28.00 more and eliminates 6 assembly parts!

Plus—After installation, PUPI crossarms continue to provide significant advantages over comparable wood crossarm assemblies—advantages that can more than offset the relative small initial cost difference:

  • Stronger than wood with much less variation in properties

  • Clean, braceless construction is easier to install

  • Lighter weight, even with galvanized steel mount attached

  • Extended service life—will never rot

  • Less maintenance—no shrinkage to cause loose hardware

  • Superior dielectric properties

  • No strength loss over time

  • Impervious to woodpeckers & insects

  • Fewer inventory items to manage—no braces, fewer bolts
